We all have moments when we feel stuck in our personal and professional lives. Whether it's a lack of motivation, feeling unfulfilled, or just feeling like we're not growing, it can be tough to break free from those negative patterns. But what if I told you that you could resolve all these inner conflicts simply by adopting a different mentality?
Sounds like BS, I know; but bear with me a little longer. I promise this will help you out more than you expect.
What is this different mentality anyway?
This mentality is usually referred to as a growth mindset, which is a term coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, and refers to the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed and improved over time through hard work, dedication, and a willingness to embrace challenges and learn from failures. Those who have a growth mindset see setbacks as opportunities for growth and progress, and they believe that their potential is not fixed or predetermined.
In contrast to a growth mindset, a fixed mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence are fixed and cannot be changed, no matter how much effort we put in. When we are ruled by such a mindset, we tend to avoid challenges and taking risks, as we fear failure and the possibility of revealing our limitations, rather than understanding these current limitations as opportunities for growth and learning. As a result, we may feel discouraged, unmotivated, and less likely to pursue our goals. The good news is that with awareness and practice, people can shift from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and unlock their full potential.
Having said that, it's essential to be aware of the potential pitfalls of a false growth mindset (shallow or incomplete understanding of the concept). Some people may think that having a growth mindset means simply adopting a positive attitude. However, a true growth mindset involves a willingness to confront challenges and failures head-on, accept and review mistakes, and continuously develop our skills and abilities. Additionally, we all have a mix of fixed and growth mindsets in different areas of our lives, and it's not about having a growth mindset 24/7. Instead, it's about recognizing when we're holding ourselves back with a fixed mindset and making a conscious effort to shift towards a growth mindset to overcome challenges and achieve our goals.
I’m selling you something I bought for myself
I can't stress enough how important it is to shift to a growth mindset. One of the most significant factors that have helped me develop this mindset is my focus on learning rather than just the results. By learning about the challenge at hand, I can better understand the problem, come up with innovative solutions, and develop new skills that can benefit me in the long run.
It's easy to fall into the trap of focusing only on the outcome and ignoring the learning process. But when we focus only on the result, we miss out on the opportunity to grow and learn from our mistakes. Instead, we can see each daunting situation as an opportunity to develop our skills, broaden our knowledge, and explore new ways of thinking.
It's also important to differentiate between seeing challenges as obstacles and seeing them as exciting opportunities. When I was used to viewing them as obstacles, I was more likely to give up, avoid the challenge altogether, or feel overwhelmed. But when I see them as opportunities, I become more motivated, energized, and excited to take them on. This mindset shift can make all the difference in our work life and help us achieve great things.
You are probably looking for these benefits for yourself (tl;dr goodies)
All of this sounds a little bit abstract, and you may be thinking that you "kind of" do some of these things already. If you're thinking that this would require too much of your energy and you still find it hard to see the value in the trouble (or if you didn't read the explanation above), here I present to you 7 simple examples of how a growth mindset can impact your personal and professional life:
1. Increased Motivation
When you adopt a growth mindset, you become more motivated to tackle new challenges and learn new skills. You're not content with staying stagnant, and you're always looking for ways to grow and improve. This drive to constantly grow is what keeps you motivated and engaged in your work and life.
2. Improved Resilience
A mindset shift you view setbacks and failures as opportunities for growth, rather than reasons to give up. This resilience allows you to bounce back from setbacks faster and more effectively, and it helps you to persevere in the face of adversity.
3. Enhanced Problem-Solving Skills
When you have a growth mindset, you're not content with just finding a solution to a problem. You're always looking for ways to improve your approach and make it more effective. This focus on growth leads to a continuous improvement in your problem-solving skills and decision-making abilities.
4. Better Work-Life Balance
Adopting a growth mindset helps you to prioritize your personal and professional goals, leading to a better work-life balance. You're more focused on what's important and you're more intentional with your time, which allows you to achieve a more fulfilling life.
5. Increased Job Satisfaction
When you have a growth mindset, you're more engaged in your work, and you feel more fulfilled by what you're doing. This increased job satisfaction leads to a better work environment, higher productivity, and a more successful career.
6. Better Relationships
A growth mindset also helps you to form better relationships. When you're focused on growth, you're more open-minded and more likely to be understanding and supportive of others. This creates a positive and supportive environment that fosters better relationships with your coworkers, friends, and family.
7. Personal Growth
Finally, a growth mindset encourages personal growth. By embracing new challenges and focusing on growth, you're setting yourself up for success and a fulfilling life. You'll be more confident, more capable, and more resilient, which will lead to greater personal growth and success.
The keys to the kingdom (tl;dr guidelines)
So, how do you create a growth mentality? How do you start cultivating this awesome, inner environment for yourself? There’s not a concrete, ordered, step-after-step guide on how to achieve this, but here's some sound advice on how to get you started:

2. Learn from Mistakes
Mistakes are inevitable, but they're also opportunities for growth .In fact, they hold tremendous value in the path for growth. When you make a mistake, reflect on what you can learn from it and how you can use that knowledge to improve in the future.

4. Continuously Educate Yourself
It’s essential for you to seek out new opportunities to learn and grow, and never stop striving to improve. Enroll in new courses, watch tutorials, go to meetups, read new books; don’t stop training your brain!

Not an end, but a beginning
Then again, don’t get me wrong: all this advice doesn't translate into easy tasks, and all these benefits won’t show up overnight. As with any long term goal, results will take time.
